Itchy scalp can be annoying, some people can pinpoint exactly what causes their itchy scalp and yet others get a bit alarmed when this irritating problem occurs. Whenever, I use a certain brand of conditioner I itch for hours until I wash out my hair and give my scalp a break. My scalp also itches a few days before I relax because it knows I am not supposed to be scratching it. It happens every time to me like clockwork. There are other reasons though why the scalp will itch, here are some:

Itchy Scalp Causes

  • Dandruff
  • Contact Dermatitis
  • Scalp Psoriasis
  • Folliculitis
  • Ringworm of scalp
  • Head Lice
  • Dry Scalp
  • Inadequate Hygiene
  • Overuse of chemical in hair care products
  • Scalp sunburn
  • Stress

Natural Home Remedies for Itchy Scalp

Similar to dry scalp and dandruff there are some remedies that you can try at home that will give you some relief from itchy scalp. The great thing about these remedies is that most of the things mentioned you might have already as part of your regimen or have easy access to them.

1. Rosemary and chamomile tea

Chamomile is soothing not only to the nerves after a long day but also to an itchy scalp, it can be used by itself or with rosemary for even faster results. You can look no further than the spice or tea section at your supermarket for your remedies. Boil a mixture of three bags of chamomile tea and about three sprigs of rosemary (chopped) or a tablespoon of it dried. Then, cool and strain the mixture. Rinse the hair with this mixture for your final rinse.

2. Natural oils are also a great boon to relieve scalp itching. These oils are especially useful:

Eucalyptus oil

Peppermint oil

Tea tree oil

Avocado oil (mix with peppermint or eucalyptus for fast results)

Jojoba oil (excellent when itchiness is caused by dryness)

3. Aloe vera gel

This is probably the most popular itchy relief remedy. Why? It works. If your itching is especially severe, use a drop or two of peppermint oil with your gel. Leave on the scalp for up to half an hour and then wash off. See the Itchy Scalp Recipe.

4.  Lemon juice

Apply pure lemon juice on the scalp for at least fifteen minutes and then rinse off

5. Apple Cider Vinegar

One part apple cider vinegar to one part water, massage the mixture in the hair and then rinse off. This actually works to prevent pre-relaxer itching, if done four or so days before you relax.

6. Scalp massage

Use your finger pads (not your nails) and massage a little jojoba or peppermint oil into your hair scalp before going to bed can stop itching.

7.  Baking soda

Apply a paste of baking soda, olive oil and water to hair root, leave on fifteen minutes and then rinse off. If doing this without the oil, leave on the hair for a minimum of seven minutes. Do not leave it on hair too long. This remedy works very well. Just condition hair after thoroughly working paste through the hair root and rinsing properly after.
